Jekyll Island is just south of Saint Simons Island and is a pretty and easy thirty minute or less drive.? It’s a pretty drive because there’s two bridges you go across (all that beautiful water!) and then Jekyll Island itself is pretty – the route we give you below takes you right past the Jekyll Island Golf Club – hey, somebody’s gotta do it, right? 😉

Visiting Jekyll Island as a Day Trip from Saint Simons
Being one of Georgia’s barrier island and also designated as one of the Golden Isles, Jekyll Island shares a lot of history with St. Simons, most notably the progression from Native tribes to being claimed by the Spanish under Ponce de Leon, to British occupation to plantation usage as part of the original 13 colonies, and then as part of the US.? Because of all this history, there are many places on Jekyll island worth visiting.? Some of the historical sites, just to mention a few, are:
The Horton House which was built in 1742 and occupied by the British Major William Horton – he had his priorities straight and established Georgia’s first brewery.
The Jekyll Island Club, which has as it’s centerpiece the Jekyll Island Club Hotel and 33 other surrounding buildings, many of them mansion-size dating from late 19th century and early 20th century, most in a remarkable state of preservation.? The hotel is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Saint Simons Day trip Summer Waves Water Park Jekyll Island
?Summer Waves water park: For the kids and just to beat the heat the bit there’s a big water park on Jekyll Island – complete opposite of visiting historic sites I know, but Jekyll does tend to be quite a bit more commercialized than Saint Simons is.
Wikipedia: Jekyll Island is one of only four Georgia barrier islands that feature a paved causeway to access the island by car. It features 5,700 acres? of land, including 4,400 acres? of solid earth and a 200-acre Jekyll Island Club Historic District. The rest is tidal marshlands, mostly on the island’s western shore. The island measures about 7 miles long by 1.5 miles wide, has 8 miles of wide, flat beaches on its east shore with sand packed hard enough for easy walking or biking, and boasts 20 miles? of hiking trails.
